The now two-part plug has increased engagement with a new curved cap and this entire section is moulded from molybdenum and not brass. This strengthening is then coupled with the thicker WXM key shape and composition.  Improved drill protection has also been delivered and it still houses 20 anti-drill points, but the clutch is shielded with the molybdenum section of the plug. There are also two locking pins now, which fire into the body of the attack pin rather than across it.  All the pins used in this area of the lock are made from hardened stainless steel 630.

The thicker key has also enabled the Brisant team to remove the 5 passive top pins and introduce two additional pin lengths to lower the active pins, whilst concurrently increasing the apex differentials between the heights, making the lock harder to pick.  The new pin heights produce in excess of 260,000 working differs, more than doubling the maximum requirement for the TS007 3 Star grade 6.

Other products are being developed alongside WXM to help sell more doors and locks.  Keylight is being introduced alongside the Keycap and Keyring product line, accommodating a battery, controller, LED light and thumb button.  It is available in the full 10 colour combinations, including glow in the dark.

Not all product evolutions have to be focussed on increasing the price, WXM is stronger, thicker and does more, but is the same price.

The current Ultion green box has been upgraded to a white design with an extra side.  This enables Brisant to close and secure the box without the use of transparent sticky pads, enabling keyed-alike and master key Ultion’s that can be delivered in boxes that stay looking good.

The point of sale clam pack is ideal for customers with shop and trade counters.  Designed exclusively for Ultion, the pack grips any Ultion cylinder up to 55/55, three thicker keys, the guarantee card and the fixing screws.  They can be hung from a point of sale display or be free standing on the counter.  The included point of sale card clearly shows the benefits and accreditations carried by Ultion, while at the same time promoting the opportunity of having more doors Ultion protected and keyed alike.

Burglars using blowtorches as a means to force entry into properties, gained widespread national coverage in February in The Mirror, Sun and Daily Mail.   With reported crime on the rise and police numbers dwindling, stories like this are become increasingly common.

The new build estate had been built with doors featuring basic cylinders that can be snapped in less than 10 seconds. With around 900 homes broken into through the door every day and 85% of these through snapping, homeowners are becoming increasingly worried about their safety. In 2018, the Ultion website enjoyed a 53% increase in the number of unique visitors, while there were ten times more followers on Facebook at the end of last year compared to the start. “I don’t think I’m going to be able to do it,” says thief

A real-life video of thieves trying to break through a door with an Ultion cylinder for over three minutes and failing has been posted on the @UltionLock Twitter feed by a happy homeowner.

Amjid Khan was out for the day when his neighbours called him to say they thought someone had tried to break in. “When I got home, I saw the house was secure but someone had snapped the handle and the external barrel of the cylinder lock. However, the main part of the cylinder was still in the door and stopped the burglars getting in. When I saw what happened I contacted a locksmith immediately – and later that day I tweeted to recommend Ultion to everyone I knew.”

“The two sacrificial sections on Ultion had been snapped and the cylinder had gone into ‘Lock Down Mode’”, explains Nick Dutton, CEO of Brisant Secure, which makes Ultion. “The burglars couldn’t get to the attack lock because it was protected deep inside a solid molybdenum core – 25% denser than iron – and secured with a dedicated retaining pin. You can hear how easily the handle got snapped off, but they couldn’t open the door because Ultion was still secure

Amjid has a video doorbell fitted and recorded two burglars trying to break in, and One asks the other for a screwdriver before admitting defeat, saying; “I don’t think we’re able to do it”.

“The Ultion lock came as standard on my door. I’d asked the installer for a decent lock but didn’t realise how it was until after the fact! I’m just so glad it stopped them getting in. It looks like they tried for more than three minutes.”

Amjid continues: “I specifically asked my locksmith for the same replacement lock and I’m upgrading the lock on the back door to Ultion too. I’ve recommended it to all my family and friends.”

The 2017 FIT Show was another spectacularly successful event for Brisant. The stand was in a prime spot at the entrance to the VIP area, visible the length of the main aisle in Hall 7. It won the Most Creative Use of Shell Award too, for the design featuring a stunning mega-sized screen which formed the back wall of the stand.

But stunning though the stand was, it was Lock-Lock, Brisant’s new security handle, which had everybody talking. The handle not only looks great, its patented design protects against cylinder picking, bumping, drilling and snapping. It breezed through the Two Star security test and it’s believed that new security standards will have to be developed to reflect its ‘real life’ security. Flick the switch on the inside handle and you activate Lock-Lock’s unique spindle block, so the door can’t be opened from the outside, even if the cylinder is breached. If the spindle can’t be turned the door won’t open. Ronseal’s promise that it does exactly what it says on the tin is so well known that it jokes about it. In full-page press ads in the Daily Mail last year, Ronseal apologises for using the misleading strapline because some of its products are sold in buckets.

The ad says its product “does exactly what it says on the rotund 203.48mm by 189.12mm vacuum-moulded white polypropylene copolymer 5 litre labelled bucket.”

The press ad points readers to an online video in which a man, purporting to be Ronseal’s marketing director, apologises for the misleading strap line.

Of course, the company won’t change its strapline because it’s become famous, and much quoted and admired.

In contrast, the door industry is so used to troublesome hardware that it fails to warn homeowners of known flaws.

Research shows that 85% of homeowners see security as the most important factor when buying a door. Just over three quarters of burglaries are via the door, 43% by forcing the lock. Don’t leave the key in the inside of a cylinder lock

It’s widely believed that leaving the key inside the cylinder when you’re at home makes the door more secure, because no one will be able to use a key to operate the lock from the outside. But on some otherwise secure cylinders, leaving the key on the inside bypasses the cylinder’s snap protection. So burglars can snap the lock and be inside within 9 seconds.

Don’t leave your thumb turn at that angle!

Thumb turns are becoming increasingly popular. But with some it’s very easy to lock yourself out when you’re leaving the house if the thumb turn isn’t left exactly vertical. If you don’t leave it in the ‘perfect’ position you’ll be locked out and you’ll need a locksmith to drill his way in.

Warning labels and instructions

Most locks are delivered with printed instructions and warnings about these ‘idiosyncrasies’ in the box they come in. But the cylinder packaging, along with its instructions, tends to be discarded when it’s fitted to doors at the manufacturer. The message doesn’t reach the homeowner, the person that needs to see it.

Homeowners see very few lock warnings and are not aware of the shortcomings of their lock, even if the installers know. They only find out when they get burgled or lock themselves out.

Locks that lock and stay locked

Not all high security locks come with warnings, whether they’re passed on to homeowners or not.

The 2016 Domestic Door Report is the most comprehensive research on security the industry has seen. It combines recent national polls of homeowners and independent locksmiths with the latest national Crime Survey figures from the Office for National Statistics.
