Following discovery of the new break-in methods BSi, Door and Hardware Federation (DHF) and Sold Secure informed lock manufacturers in 2023 that they were raising the industry standards to defeat these aggressive new methods and stay ahead of the burglars.

ALPS is the most secure cylinder lock technology. It’s the only technology that currently defeats the four established attack methods – drilling, picking, bumping and snapping – as well as twisting and thermal.

4 New Test Tools

On the 30th September, PAS24:2022+A1:2024 became the current door accreditation standard. It is directly referenced by the updated 3-star (TS007-1) with BSi, DHF, Sold Secure Diamond and Secured by Design (SBD) are all synchronised. 

The new test is brutal and passing isn’t easy! The new attack methods require 4 new tools.

Brisant-Secure’s patented ALPS technology passed the test in March 2024. Since then, we’ve been working flat out on tooling, marketing, and building considerable stocks to support the launch of Ultion ALPS. Since ALPS is still the only technology to have passed, we expect very high demand.

The seen face of the new Ultion looks the same with the same marking to help with interchangeability and a smooth upgrade. Only on the box and the side of the cylinder does it change its marking.

Adding ALPS protection to Ultion comes without compromises or trade-offs and the key is both back and forward compatible. So existing Ultion customers can upgrade their security without having to change their keys.

As a milestone launch we’re expecting high demand and have planned for it. When stock of existing DCBSX locks expire orders will automatically switch to the new DCUAW product codes so customers don’t have to think about it.

In time, other technologies may pass the test, but it’s easy to overlook how long it takes once a concept is approved to convert into available stock with marketing assets so customers can buy and sell with confidence.

Adding the tools to test for the new attacks to the PAS24 update mirrors the change made by Sold Secure to the Diamond (SS312) standard earlier this year. While achieving the standard is significantly tougher, it keeps our standards one step ahead of the burglars.

Nick Dutton, CEO Brisant-Secure, explains: “The battle with burglars never stops. When lock makers became aware of these two aggressive attack methods last year, the bad news was that most locks would be defenceless against burglars using them. So, the BSi consulted extensively and has acted decisively. But adding these new tools makes the updated PAS24 the toughest test yet.

“Like the BSi, Brisant-Secure is always looking to be one step ahead of new attack methods, which is why we’re the first to have a lock successfully tested and accredited with the new tools. The process to having sellable locks is long, and not one we’d want to start when the changes were first announced. Once you’ve thought of the innovations behind the concept, there’s the lock redesign, and IP (Intellectual Property) checking. Then there’s the tooling production and testing to prove the new locks work before you can progress to production and shipping. Normally that would take two to three years. But because our patented ALPS technology was accredited in March, our customers can expect to see Ultion with ALPS technology rolled out very soon. Another Ultion first!”

That’s why we’re thrilled to celebrate Neil Davies, our Financial Controller, who has recently graduated with a NEBOSH qualification.

Why Pursue Health and Safety?

Though Neil’s background is in accounting and financial control, his passion for Health and Safety developed through years of working in SME businesses. In those roles, Neil handled everything from finance to HR and legal compliance, but Health and Safety was the area that resonated with him the most.

“For me, Health and Safety provided the most personal sense of accomplishment,” Neil explains. “It’s not just about following regulations, it’s about actively ensuring that our team members come to work and go home safely every day.” With this passion driving him, Neil knew he needed to expand his expertise to the highest level, and the NEBOSH qualification, widely regarded as the ‘diamond standard’ in occupational safety, was the natural choice.

Years of Commitment to Safety at Brisant

Neil’s journey into Health and Safety didn’t start overnight. Over the last 15 years, including his time at Brisant Secure, he’s been involved in shaping and implementing Health and Safety protocols. However, he felt the need to formalise his skills with a NEBOSH qualification to bring even more value to Brisant Secure.

“Being involved in Health and Safety on an operational level for so long gave me a solid foundation, but NEBOSH pushed me to understand the complex science behind it,” Neil says. From evaluating risks like machinery hazards and forklift safety to understanding the impact of workplace exposure to noise and chemicals, Neil’s NEBOSH journey has broadened his expertise in every aspect of workplace safety.

The Challenges of NEBOSH and Brisant’s Support

Achieving this qualification wasn’t easy. “NEBOSH is an incredibly demanding course that requires an in-depth technical understanding across a wide range of topics,” Neil shares. However, he had strong support from Brisant Secure along the way. “The fact that Nick and Steve allowed me to dedicate time during working hours for this course speaks volumes about Brisant’s commitment to safety,” he notes.

Balancing work, personal life, and studies was a challenge for Neil, but one he was willing to take on. “During the 6-7 months of exam preparation, my personal life took a backseat, but I knew the result would be worth it, both for me and Brisant Secure.”

Implementing New Skills at Brisant Secure

Now equipped with his NEBOSH qualification, Neil is already putting his new knowledge to work at Brisant Secure. “Having a deeper understanding of risk management allows me to evaluate our current processes and make meaningful improvements,” he explains.

One of the key changes Neil has introduced is improving worker consultation during risk assessments. By involving employees more directly in safety protocols, Neil believes Brisant can create a more engaged workforce, with employees taking ownership of Health and Safety risks. In addition, regular safety toolbox talks have been enhanced, focusing on raising awareness and encouraging proactive identification of potential hazards.

“We’ve also implemented more proactive H&S monitoring techniques,” Neil says. “This allows us to spot areas that need improvement before they become safety concerns, helping us stay ahead of any potential issues.”

What This Means for Brisant Secure’s Future

Neil’s NEBOSH qualification isn’t just a personal achievement, it strengthens Brisant Secure’s position as a company that prioritises the safety of its employees. “We are now preparing for the ISO45001 Health and Safety accreditation, which is the pinnacle of international H&S standards,” Neil adds. Achieving this certification will further demonstrate Brisant Secure’s commitment to ensuring that every employee can come to work, perform their duties safely, and return home without harm.

Beyond Health and Safety, Neil’s commitment to professional development continues. He’s enrolled in an MBA program with the Open University, starting in October 2024. “While my heart is in Health and Safety, I’m also passionate about helping businesses succeed in all areas. The MBA will allow me to formalise my knowledge in management, operations, and beyond, bringing even more value to Brisant Secure.”

Following a successful test on 25^th April 2024, our patented ALPS lock technology is the first to pass the 2024 security test update introduced in January.  This update will be used for 3* euro cylinder locks by Secured by Design, PAS24 and Sold Secure Diamond.

Why is there a new standard, and why hasn’t everyone heard about it?

In the never-ending tug-of-war between burglars and security standards, installers need to know they are selling the most secure doors to homeowners. So, the BSI, Sold Secure and Secured by Design have moved fast to ensure that the new security test will prevent inventive burglars getting ahead and finding a way to defeat 3* locks. The new 2024 standard will reassure door makers, installers, and homeowners that doors with 3* locks continue to be the gold standard for door security.

On Friday 5^th January Brisant Secure acquired the business and intellectual property of Deseo Locking Systems Limited for an undisclosed sum.

Deseo, based in Braintree, is an innovative trailblazer with critical security patents to its name. The patented Deseo ALPS cylinder incorporates the UK and European patented Automatic Lock Protection System (ALPS). This system resists all well-known and many lesser known forced entry methods. Unlike other 3* cylinders that give protection when attacked, Deseo ALPS gives maximum security at all times. This clever, innovative design therefore protects against all existing attacks. And it’s this elegant, simple design concept that also protects against most of the attack methods burglars and locksmiths might imagine.

Deseo Locking Systems’ Marcus and Mark O’Sullivan stay on with the business and Mark joins the Brisant-Secure board as Deseo Director.

Early on in her career Charlotte found her passion for face-to-face customer interactions as a Commercial Office Manager. Following on from that, she transitioned to another role focussing on brand and product awareness among fabricators and installers while being on the road.

Kevin Harvey has regrouped with his ex-colleagues Nick Dutton and Steve Stewart at Brisant Secure as Managing Director. Whilst Kevin’s 30 years in the industry have covered hardware, PVC profile and conservatories, the last 5 years have been in the composite door sector at Future Products.

Kevin said ‘The two CEOs have invited me back and having worked for both of them separately it’s such an amazing opportunity to work with the two of them together.  The dynamics they have created within the business and the team they have put together affirms my belief that this is a tremendous opportunity to join a company that is driving the standards within the hardware industry.  

I have a strong hardware background will serve me well with regards to the product range itself.  I had almost 12 years in selling hardware.  At Future I have been using the products in a first-hand capacity for the best part of six years.” 

With Ultion products due to expand even further in 2023, Nick Dutton says ‘Kevin is highly regarded in the industry and his joining our team is a big marker in Brisant’s evolution.  Coupling this high regard with his understanding our quality ethos, knowing many of our team, suppliers, customers and products places him ideally to help us introduce the next wave of Ultion products and initiatives.’

Annabel Mantel has joined Brisant-Secure as the Finance Director.  Brisant gained investment from the British Growth Fund earlier in 2021, which was to support ambitious long-term growth plans and enable further innovations.  

Nick Dutton, CEO of Brisant-Secure said, “Annabel is the perfect person to enable Brisant to forge ahead with measured growth, ensuring customers and suppliers continue to receive exceptional service. Her mixture of finance and commercial skills are a perfect match for the business at this point in time.”

Annabel comes to Brisant from a varied background in finance.  She started at Ernst and Young and trained in audit, before moving to work in Financial Services, spending ten years with GE Capital and Santander. In 2016 she left to set up her own consultancy working for small and medium sized enterprises.  She comes to Brisant from Casselllie.    

Annabel said she was attracted to work with Brisant because, “It’s a good bunch of people; Steve and Nick have built a team that want to stay with the business long term.  That’s an attraction.  It’s the people that you work with and spend every day with that are the most important; and everyone here is pulling in the same direction.”

Brisant is keen to continue to grow, adding additional innovative products that will work well for their customer base.  Annabel added, “Brisant is doing phenomenally well and managed to secure investment from BGF.  It feels like I am on familiar ground. It’s a nice culture and a business that fundamentally works and has lots of opportunity to grow.”

Brisant Secure has appointed Gareth Turner as northern business development manager.

Gareth, a well-known name in hardware with over 25 years’ industry experience, will be looking after customers in northern England and Scotland.

“Brisant has changed the face of hardware and security with its high quality, innovative, market-leading products, but what Brisant wants to achieve is different, and that’s what appealed to me,” Gareth said. “The service and support are ground-breaking too. Interfacing with homeowners to pull through demand and adding value to fabricators’ and installers’ products so they are more profitable is a good reason to convert.

“So, the offer to become part of the team was too big to miss. I’m joining at an exciting time as we’re launching a number of products such as the new 3-Star security solution which includes an all-new 2-Star security handle.
